Accelerator Physics at Hamburg University

Our research group is located at the University of Hamburgā€˜s Institute of Experimental Physics and is part of the Advanced Study Group of the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science. We have a long-standing close cooperation with groups from DESY, in particular within our jointly founded LAOLA lab the Laboratory for Laser- and beam-driven plasma Acceleration, and are a Strategic Partner of DESY in the Helmholtz Program ARD.
Accelerator science aims at developing and advancing drivers for novel X-ray light sources, such as the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser XFEL, which is based upon a large-scale superconducting radio-frequency accelerator, as well as ultra-compact, high-power laser-driven FELs. Further applications aim at novel medical imaging modalities as well as lab experiments for astrophysical studies.
