Accelerator Physics Group at Hamburg University

Our research group is located at the University of Hamburg‘s Institute of Experimental Physics and is part of the Advanced Study Group of the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science. We have a long-standing close cooperation with groups from DESY, in particular within our jointly founded LAOLA lab the Laboratory for Laser- and beam-driven plasma Acceleration, and are a Strategic Partner of DESY in the Helmholtz Program ARD.
Accelerator science aims at developing and advancing drivers for novel X-ray light sources, such as the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser XFEL, which is based upon a large-scale superconducting radio-frequency accelerator, as well as ultra-compact, high-power laser-driven FELs. Further applications aim at novel medical imaging modalities as well as lab experiments for astrophysical studies.
